A huge focus of hurricane rescue and recovery efforts centers around family pets. There are usually drives for dog and cat food, foster pet parents stepping up, evacuation shelters designed specifically to be pet-friendly, and dozens of other ways people are making sure their furry friends don’t get left behind. One kind of animal that doesn’t get a lot of focus though are the farm animals affected by these storms and the difficulties they face. With the frequency and severity of hurricanes occurring this season, it is important that we remember these animals.
Because farm animals are large, it can be difficult for them to be rescued, and difficult for them to get themselves to higher ground. For some though, no matter how hard it is, no man left behind means farm animals too. That was the case during one such storm for a very lucky donkey, who happened to be seen by a rescue group trying to cross flooded waters on his own, and obviously struggling to make it. The poor donkey was up to his chest in rising water, and the person who first saw him knew that they had to help. They put out a call for anyone else close by with muscles and a boat to respond, and respond they did.
By setting up a flotation device around the donkey’s neck, and attaching ropes strategically in a way that allowed them to pull the donkey safely to the other side, the rescuers were able to get him out of danger, and to solid ground where he could stand on his own two feet. The rescuers didn’t expect him to thank them, after all, he is a donkey, but they were shocked when the animal flashed them a huge smile of appreciation. It was enough to make everyone who could see it smile, even in the midst of all that they were dealing with.
The incredible journey and rescue were not over yet though, as the donkey was still in for more help, and had, even more, a reason to smile. He was transported to a rescue facility that had accommodations just for large farm animals such as himself and dried off, put under a heat lamp for some sauna relaxation time, and given his favorite meal of oats.
The story has not only warmed the hearts of those all over the world, with news stories and videos spread far and wide, but helped focus attention on some of the amazing and good things that happen when people work together, and has also drawn attention to farm animals in need. In the end, this one donkey is making a difference in the lives of hundreds of other large breed animals who are also in need of rescue. In this case, smile really is worth a thousand words.
