When you first think of a dog you probably typically think of the adorable family pet who runs up to you after a long day as if it’s been years since they’ve seen you. Or we see the image of them chasing their tails or unsuccessfully running after a squirrel. Dogs are also known for their acute sense of smell and ability to be trained. When disaster hits, many rescue crews turn to dogs to help them in their rescue missions. We watch the adorable creatures that we’re usually trying to encourage to play fetch, turn into fierce rescuers. With all of the disasters happening around the world, one is standing out. After an earthquake hit Mexico earlier this month, search crews, including an adorable canine sidekick named Frida, began fervently looking for survivors.

Frida is a seven-year-old pup and member of the Mexican Navy’s canine unit (SEMAR). As a member of this unit, Frida has been able to locate 50 people in her time with the unit. Included in that number is the 12 that she has helped rescue from the devastation of the earthquake. Her job is simple: she is to sniff out survivors amongst the rubble and alert the rescue crews so they can be dug out. She continued doing this when another earthquake hit earlier this week. This one left 200 deceased and much more unaccounted for.

Frida is a Labrador and a hard worker, but she always looks stylish as well. She wears protective goggles and boots to protect her paws. She has gained international acclaim after a photo of her was shared on Reddit. It has blown up all over social media and many people are weighing in. The President of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, even tweeted about her! She has proved incredibly valuable to the SEMAR team and a hero to those she is able to save. She can get into spaces that humans often can’t reach making it easier to find them.

The dogs that are members of the SEMAR team go through extensive training in order to learn how to find people, keep themselves safe, and their human counterparts. At a school in Mexico, the SEMAR team is searching for survivors. So far, they have found 21 people but no survivors. We can only hope that the dogs can find survivors.

Frida is certainly more than an adorable pup wearing goggles and boots. She’s worked hard to gain the skills that she has and works well with her human and dog counterparts. She may be having her 15 minutes of fame but she is also bringing a little bit of light to an otherwise dark situation. I’m sure the survivors that she finds are happy to see her sweet face sniffing them out.
