Dog Escapes Loving Homes To Comfort Other Pups At The Shelter!

Most dogs are eager to be adopted and loved by a new family. They impatiently wait for the day that someone will come into the shelter and decide that they’ve found a connection with that particular dog. Upon their adoption, they hurry out to their new home and never look back.  Gumby is not most dogs. He is a hound that probably began his life on a farm or as a hunting dog. He has the typical braying bark of a hound, and you can certainly pick him out from a crowd.

He was found by the Charleston Animal Society wandering the streets at about 3 or 4-year olds. It is always sad to see an abandoned dog, but the Charleston Animal Society soon learned that maybe Gumby wasn’t abandoned at all, but had escaped.

On the outside, Gumby appeared to be a very adoptable dog. He was healthy, very friendly, and a good-looking pup to boot. The animal society was confident he would be adopted without issue. And he was.  They didn’t think about how long he would be adopted for. Gumby returned to the shelter three days after being adopted the first time, then just six days after his second option. For the next two years, he was adopted and then returned repeatedly. He was also found on the street three times. While he was lovable, the families didn’t know what to do with him because he kept escaping.

No one could understand why Gumby kept escaping and trying to get back to the shelter until one person noticed the pup’s unique skill.  Gumby is an empath and is skilled at helping dogs who are experiencing anxiety being at the shelter.

The shelter decided to keep Gumby themselves and put him to work.  His new home is permanently the shelter and works as an “Ambassa-Dog.”  He now helps with behavioral demonstrations for the other dogs in the shelter and helps new dogs to adjust to their new, albeit temporary, life at the shelter. While Gumby is a kind-hearted and sweet dog, he also has a rambunctious spirit which you can see as he sits on a pile of feathers that used to be the filling for a doggie pillow.

Gumby has had so many chances at a second chance because the Charleston Animal Society is a no-kill shelter. At many other shelters, after being returned or found so many times poor Gumby may have had a different fate. If he was deemed un-adoptable, there is little another shelter could do. Thankfully the Charleston Animal Society believes they can find a purpose or a home for every dog. Gumby has found his place and his home in the shelter and gives hope to other dogs who maybe have issues staying adopted.
