The state of Ohio has, since April, had a very unusual state trooper, one who happens to be only 12-years-old. That trooper, Brett Holbrook has a condition called Apraxia of Speech, which means he has problems with sounds, syllables, and words. Not being one to be slowed down by such issues, he decided in April that he had a very specific goal for the summer. He went to his mom and told her that over summer break he planned to visit every single state patrol post in the state of Ohio.
What makes the story even more unusual – Brett isn’t even from Ohio. He lives in Michigan with his parents and first met an Ohio State patrol officer when his father was being pulled over by one. Not one to hold grudges, Brett was extremely impressed by the trooper’s uniform, as well as his professional nature. When they got home, his mother even made him his very own Ohio State Trooper uniform, so that he could dress like his heroes.
His mother also took the liberty of informing the State Troopers of his goal, so they would know to expect Brett. With this advanced warning, when they started their tour of posts with the Bowling Green patrol post, troopers there greeted Brett with an Honorary Trooper Commission and giving him his very own ticket book. His journey was far from over, however. In fact, he has ever since been promoted to Lieutenant, and he has spent time at commander’s desks in four separate districts across the state.
Brett Holbrook, a young man with Apraxia, became an Honorary Trooper in April. Afterwards, he asked his mom if he could visit every Patrol Post. She made his dream come true and together they have traveled nearly 3,000 miles and logged over 100 hours on the road. Brett has conducted inspections, raised the flag, and brought smiles to our faces at each stop. Thanks for spending your summer with us Brett!
