While Being Trapped By Flood, Bakers Make Hundreds Of Pan Dulce For Harvey Victims

When four bakers were recently trapped inside their Mexican bakery for days because of the flood waters from Hurrican Harvey, they decided to put their own spin on the saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” For these four they decided, when life traps you in a bakery, make enough pan dulce to feed hundreds of other people in need.

The four realized they were trapped last week when they came in for their usual baking night shift, where they spent the twilight hours baking treats for the next morning’ customers, and then realized that they had severely underestimated the flood waters that Harvey would bring. The four had no recourse but to stay in the bakery and wait for the flood waters to recede, and so they spent the next 48 hours doing what any good bakers trapped for two days would do, using 4,400 pounds of flour to make sweet bread for as many people as they could feed.

The Mexican bakery, El Bolillo, serves delicious Mexican cakes and patisseries, their specialties, to Houstonians on a daily basis, and somehow managed to not only not flood, but maintain power and water during the entirety that the bakers were trapped there. The men were, of course, worried about their families and friends, but thought that baking would take their mind off of their fears as much as possible, and they would be doing something useful for other people in need. They knew if they were trapped, then a lot of other people would be trapped too, and their sweet bread would be welcome with open arms throughout the city.

The manager of the bakery was extremely proud of his employees. When help could finally get to them, two days after they became trapped, he explains, “When they realized they were stuck, they decided to keep themselves busy and help the community and made as many loaves of bread as they could. By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we had taken the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.”
