The state of Florida has been battling with Hurricane Irma and will continue to deal with the devastation brought by the rain, high winds, and flooding for many weeks or even months to come. After seeing what Hurricane Harvey left behind in Texas, residents of Florida expected this, and took as many steps as possible to prepare for what they knew was to come, including getting all necessary supplies to last through the storm and the recovery period afterward.

Unfortunately, one consequence of millions of people needing the same supplies at once, such as food, water, batteries, and gasoline, means that these things can quickly start running out, and that supply can no longer keep up with demand. This is a problem with all storm preparation supplies, but when someone needs electricity to be able to live, and therefore needs a source of power that will not be knocked out by the storm, this can literally mean the difference between life or death. That knowledge is what sent one woman, Pam Brekke, to Lowes hardware searching for a generator.

Pam’s father requires an oxygen machine, and without the ability to power up the machines he needs to live, he can face very real, and very grave danger. Unfortunately for Pam, despite doing what she needed to do in order to make sure she was prepared, the supply and demand problem came into full effect, and she was right behind the person buying the last generator in the store. The employees thought there might be more on the way, but they couldn’t be sure of where or when, or even if they would get there before Irma. Pam was at a complete loss, and terrified for what it could mean for her father, broke down in tears in the middle of the hardware store. That’s when Ramon Santiago decided to be the hero she needed.

Ramon has a language barrier with Pam, so he was unable to have a full conversation with her, but tears are universal, and when he saw how she was crying, he knew that something important was happening, and she really needed that generator. Luckily, he happened to have one in his own cart and knew exactly what he had to do to fix things. He went up to Pam and gave his generator to her. He couldn’t tell her exactly what he was thinking, but he could hug her, and in simple terms, said, “It’s okay. Everything is fine.”

For her part, Pam was completely overwhelmed by the gesture and the roller coaster of emotions she had just experienced. Pam hugged Ramon with all she had, and said, “God will bless that man.”

Thanks to this kind gesture, Pam’s father is now safe and will be able to get through any hurricane aftermath safe and sound with his family.
